Science Inquiry on Planet Earth and Beyond

This week in Room 9 we have started our new inquiry on Science and it's called "Planet Earth and Beyond". We will explore and learn some cool and fascinating facts about our very own planet Earth and other planets and things surrounding the outer space. Some photos of our's showing what we have been up to today.

 

Cook Island Language Week

We are learning about the Cook Island language. We are learning to say hello, ask how are you to someone and know some more basic things about this beautiful language from one our neighbouring island nations. We are also making a class quilt with Tivaeva patterns and floral patterns. We worked in groups to create these presentations about the Cook Island language.

 

Gardening

Today we planted some veggies and flowers in the garden patches outside the senior school classes and our school library. We will be harvesting, taking care of the gardens and enjoy some fresh veggies from our gardens.
We will post some photos soon when our gardens start to bloom.

Creating Pyramid Paper Diorama

Today in our class we are creating paper diorama's that are three dimensional and we will share our learning about Matariki on our diorama's we create in a group. 
For the past week or so we have been learning about Matariki in our class. We have really enjoyed learning about it and are doing some art this week to share our learning about Matariki.

Our Matariki Inquiry Words Wall. We are using a Padlet to write all the words we find new or don't really understand. We will discuss as a class what these words mean.

Today the students have started their inquiry about Matariki. Here is an activity slides doc students are working from and learning, creating and sharing. It is an activity slides doc in progress and is not yet completed. We are working in small groups or with a buddy on our inquiry on Matariki.

Writing for this week- Should Matariki Be a Public Holiday? Students have made a start on this today. This is writing in progress.

How can we protect our oceans?

How are we going to protect the oceans? Why do we 

need to protect our oceans? I think that we can protect

 the oceans by not dumping all of our waste in the sea. 

Why do we?

Rubbish is being digested by dolphins and other 

marine mammals. It is very important to recycle and 

it is important to put the rubbish in the right place and

recycle stuff.

Here are a few examples-

Why should we protect the oceans?

Why do you think our oceans should be protected?

Is it because they have dirty water or do you think

that sea animals are dying?

Our ocean needs to be protected because plastic

is going into our ocean and killing sea animals and

our way to stop that is to not throw plastic into the

ocean and not bring plastic to the beach. 

Oceans provide at least a sixth of the animal protein

people eat. Living oceans absorb carbon dioxide from

the atmosphere and reduce climate change impacts.

The diversity and productivity of the world's oceans is

a vital interest for humankind. Our security, our economy,

our very survival all require healthy oceans.

Online Learning - Students using hangout meets to stay connected and do their learning in a group

Some students in Room 9 have been learning about landscapes in a group using Google Hangout Meets. They watched a documentary about the planet Earth and the landscapes on it together and presented their summary of what they learnt from the documentary by writing a story about it. As part of our inquiry learning students read a variety of texts and also choose on their own what they want to read or watch to learn more about the topic they are learning about and this group of three students decided to watch a documentary about the planet Earth together. Amazing effort towards their learning in these times when students are learning from their homes. Well done Luisapeta, Tina and Soloia.

Our current inquiry is on Landscapes. We are learning how landscapes are made? We are doing a Landscape project on some of the magnificent landscapes in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
