Prizegiving 2020

Congratulations to all the recipients of certificates and awards. You all were rockstars and have done so well this year despite it being a year with a major pandemic hit year. Covid has taught us many things and the things that we mostly take for granted are things that are to be appreciated everyday and valued (taken care of). For if we take care of the small things, big things will come to us or happen.

Value people, your family, friends, people who are there for you to help you. Value yourself. Always believe in yourself. It is ok not to know something, it is not ok not to try.

Whether you received a certificate today or not, celebrate your success anyway coz you all have succeeded being great learners this year.

Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Be kind and happy.

Solving Word Problems Collaboratively

In Maths we have been solving word problems working collaboratively (in a group with our classmates). We have been learning to understand the word problem first and figure out what the question/problem is asking us to do and then work it out using a strategy that most of us want to use in our group and talk about why we used this strategy.

These are the videos we have watched to help us understand how we can solve word problems and the strategies we can use to solve word problems. Hope you find these videos as helpful and informational as we found them.

Look at how we have gone about solving word problems since last week.
If you would like to view more of these then please visit our individual blogs. Thank you.

Creating Mood and Atmosphere in Writing

We are learning to notice or recognise how authors create mood and atmposhere. We will be exploring a variety of texts in the next few weeks and look at how authors use language to create mood and atmposhere in their writing.
Our goal is to be able to create mood and atmposhere in our own writing. Here is a warm up writing task we have been doing this week. If you have any questions then please let us know in the comments section. Thank you.

Maker-Y with Nane from Kootuitui Ki Papakura

We are really fortunate to have Nane from Kootuitui Ki Papakura come to our class every Tuesday and work with us on coding and robotics. Today we learnt that when we are creating it is important to remember that there is no right or wrong and the idea is to keep trying and if we make a mistake then we just debug and keep working on creating something until we get there.

Speech Competition Winners and Participants

On Thursday 24th September we held the senior school speech competion. Each class in the senior school had 3 participants to present their speech in the finals.

Our topis for the speech competition was "Heroes are ordinary people". All students wrote persuasively to present their ideas, opinions and statements in their speech. All 3 classes in the senior school had their own speech competition in their individual classes first and the teachers selected 3 students from each class to present their speech in the finals.

Here are our participants and winners. We are so proud of these students and all the students in the senior school for having the courage to present their speeches with enthusiasm. All students did an amazing job.

Awesome Online Learners

Some snippets of awesome learning that most students in Room 9 have been doing since Auckland went into level 3 lockdown on 12th August.

We have been learning to write letters. We are writing to a pen pal at a school in Pukekohe and also thank you letters to people who we think have done something for us that we are grateful for.

17.08.2020
Dear Pen Pal,

My name is Neha and I'm 10 years old. I have one brother, and
he is older than me. Do you have any brothers or sisters? If yes
then are they older and younger than you? We are a family of
four. Both my parents are working and my brother is a motor
mechanic. My family comes from Fiji. I was born in Auckland.

I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I go to Edmund Hillary School
and I am in year 5. There are 30 students in my class. I like
going to school and my favourite subject is Maths. My
teacher’s name is Manpreet and she is from India. I really l
ike her. My favourite sports are soccer and tennis. I
play everyday during breaks in school. I also play
in the park close to my house.

My cousins come to my house too. In New Zealand
there are lots of amazing and attractive places like
Skyline Gondola, Huka falls, Mt Ruapehu, Sky Tower
and many more. I have been to these places with
my family and I really enjoyed it. My favorite place is
Skyline Rotorua.

I hope to hear from you sometime.
Take care in the lockdown in Auckland.

Best wishes

Neha

  Dear: Manpreet

There has been some awesome learning that some of the students from Room 9 have been doing in the first three days of online learning under level 3 lockdown.

Some of them have had their first go at creating a Powtoon (Digital learning object) to share their learning. Please click on these student blogs on the left hand side of this blog.
